Jonathan Sexton

Jonathan Sexton is the principal and founder of Sexton Law Firm, established in 1994. He now serves as Senior Partner of Sexton Weldon Law Firm. Mr. Sexton graduated from the University of Georgia in 1984 with a degree in criminal justice. He went on to work in the common carrier industry from 1984-1988 before attending law school. Mr. Sexton attended Georgia State University School of Law from 1988-1991 and obtained his Juris Doctor in Law in June 1991. After graduating and being admitted to the bar in 1991, he went to work for a civil litigation firm that handled multi-million dollar civil cases until he struck out independently in 1994.

Mr. Sexton is a past member of the American Association for Justice, a past area vice-president, and a current member of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association, and is admitted to practice law in Georgia and Florida. He is licensed to practice in all Georgia courts, including the Georgia Supreme Court, Georgia Court of Appeals, State, Superior, and Magistrate Courts of Georgia. Mr. Sexton specializes in personal injury, workers' compensation, medical malpractice, and other civil torts.

Mr. Sexton is married to his wife of 25 years, JoAnna, and they share three daughters. Mr. Sexton is actively involved in his church, Rock Springs, serving on several boards and teaching Sunday school.

Jacob Weldon

Jacob Weldon partnered with Jonathan Sexton to create Sexton Weldon Law Firm in 2022 after working with Sexton Law Firm for four years. Mr. Weldon graduated from the University of Georgia with dual undergraduate degrees in Psychology and Criminal Justice in 2005. Following graduation, Mr. Weldon served in the United States Marine Corps from 2006 to 2010. After meeting his wife, Sarah, in 2010, he worked with a federal intelligence agency in Missouri. Mr. Weldon began law school at Saint Louis University before returning to Georgia and graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law in 2015.

After being admitted to the bar, Mr. Weldon focused primarily on criminal defense, gaining invaluable experience at Virgil L. Brown & Associates in Zebulon from 2015-2018. Mr. Weldon joined Sexton Law Firm as a criminal attorney in late 2018. Showing his commitment to client satisfaction and invaluable expertise, Mr. Weldon began to pick up personal injury cases and other civil torts while balancing a robust criminal caseload. Mr. Weldon's impressive track record under Mr. Sexton has solidified his position as a named partner and his reputation as a protege of Mr. Sexton, ensuring his continued success in all areas of legal practice.

He is licensed to practice in all Georgia courts, including the Georgia Supreme Court, Georgia Court of Appeals, State, Superior, and Magistrate Courts of Georgia. Mr. Weldon and his wife have two daughters. He is a member of Rock Springs Church and is currently authoring a series of historical novels based on the lives of Saul and David, the first two kings of ancient Israel. It is called The Anointed.

Jaqueline Cortez Avila

Jaqueline Cortez Avila is a bilingual associate attorney at Sexton Weldon, fluent in Spanish and English. Ms. Avila began at our firm as a law clerk before passing the bar in 2023 and joining full-time as an associate attorney practicing in the areas of criminal law, immigration law, personal injury, and estate planning. Ms. Avila earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Georgia State University in 2019, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Ms. Avila worked for one year at an Immigration law firm in Atlanta, Georgia, before attending Georgia State University College of Law, where she obtained her Juris Doctor and graduated in the top 15% of her class in 2023. While in law school, Ms. Avila interned at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia and the Clayton County District Attorney’s Office.  Ms. Avila enjoys playing soccer with a young attorney league and spending time with her husband, Rigo, and their German shepherd, Max Boy.
